Tuxedo Money Prepaid Card

Unique 'eccount' functionality

Overall:

The Tuxedo prepaid MasterCard® is a great prepay card, with all the usual offerings, but it shines in the servicing areas. The Tuxedo Card offers an ‘eccount’ which is similar to most other prepaid card online services but with more mobile functionality.

Good bits:

apply

> The eccount.

The Tuxedo card eccount is great as you can download it to your mobile and from there have bucket loads of functionality, including moving your money about from one account to another. However, after your first month you do get charged for it.

> MasterCard or Maestro.

You can simply choose which type of prepaid card you want. Tuxedo Prepaid MasterCard has better acceptance and all the other benefits a MasterCard brings you but the Maestro will allow you to get cashback (there is a fee with this).

> Get £5 free.

At the moment, if you purchase your prepaid card you will get £5 put into your account BUT this only applies if you make an initial £50 top up

Bad bits:

> Activation form

You have to send in a form to activate your prepaid card.  Many other suppliers only ask this if they haven’t been able to verify you during your online application or when you purchase your prepaid card. See the ‘Card verification’ page for more details.

> There are lots of extra fees.

Once you have purchased a Tuxedo card and been approved they charge you for a lot of extra things so you probably will want to make the most of your account.  A few examples are: Direct debit set up (per payment), direct debit monthly fees, person-to-person money transfer fees, cashback for Maestro cards, a new paying in book, if you wish to change your tariff…

> No alternative if you are not verified

Many providers, such as cashplus and Virgin, offer you a prepaid card even when you haven’t been fully verified (see the prepaid card verification page for full details) >. However, Tuxedo don’t do this for their prepaid card.

Standard bits:

> All fairly standard

Much of the Tuxedo prepaid card is standard, it’s mainly the service options that you can do via your mobile phone that make it stand out, that and all the extra charges.

> Cashback.

They have a cashback site that offers you between 15 and 20% off various things including holidays.

Best prepaid card for you if:

  • You if you love your mobile phone and want to do a lot of money management with it.
