Bread Prepaid MasterCard

A standard offering.

Overall:

The Bread prepay MasterCard® is a good product, with everything you would expect at a minimum for a prepay card offering but without many extra features.

Good bits:

apply

> They’re a relatively established UK player.

Bread have been around a short while, launching with a Maestro product. However, they have recently relaunched with a prepay MasterCard.

> Extra customer servicing options.

They offer customer servicing by email, which not all providers do.

> SMS payment option when getting your card.

You can pay via your phone when you apply for your card. It does cost a little more but it is simple to do.

Bad bits:

> They only offer one tariff option.

They only offer the prepay card on a single tariff, which is a pay as you go one.  This may be expensive if you wish to use your card a lot.

> They charge extra for money transfer.

If you want to use your card as an alternative way to transfer money, you may need to look elsewhere, as for every ‘moneyshare’ transaction you do, you will incure a £1.50 charge. Other card providers, if you send an additional card to where you want to get your funds to, offer this for free (after any potential fees for the additional card, which can be free, and any foreign exchange fees).  See our Money Transfer page for further details.

> Short cooling off period.

The Bread prepay card ‘cooling off’ period appears to be on the short side, when compared to someone like Virgin. The cooling off period is 14 days from receipt of your card (Virgin has it as 14 days after activation, up until then you can cancel at any point).

Standard bits:

> It’s all a bit standard.

The Bread prepay card doesn't really offer anything that would separate it from the crowd.  Many of their features are what we would consider as standard.

> Cashback.

They have an online cashback service, like many of the other prepaid cards.

Best card for you if:

  • You don’t want anything fancy or complicated, you don’t want to use it too often and want to complete your account servicing online.
