Why Prepay?
There are many advantages, benefits and uses of prepaid credit cards. The key advantage is that prepaid cards are available to virtually everybody. So pretty much anyone can benefit from shopping in places they would ordinarily only be able to with a prepaid mastercard (we’re talking online or over the phone here), and those that don’t have access to a mainstream bank accounts, a prepaid credit card gives you the next best thing. So, whatever your circumstances, you can save money! Or spend more money in new places, but lets focus on the SAVINGS!
There are many other reasons for prepaid cards, even if the previous reasons don’t apply to you. We’ve summarised what we think are the main features, benefits and use on the following pages but the highlights are:
- Guaranteed acceptance.
- Safe and secure, Chip and PIN, no link to your bank account.
- Purchase protection and fraud protection with some prepaid cards.
- No links to your bank account and no paper trails.
- Credit building options.
- Money savings, when you don’t have to use things such as cheque cashers.
- Holiday money alternative, budgeting and use them everyday!
See the following to see how this all works, we’ve also told you the limitations to prepaid cards – no they are not perfect!

Who can't get a card? Under 18?
There are only a limited number of prepaid cards available to under 18’s. If you are under 18 but 14 or over you can often only be an additional cardholder on someone else’s prepaid mastercard account. Most companies discourage younger prepaid card owners as it is deemed by some as irresponsible (in case you go off and buy dodgy stuff from the internet) but those that do provide them say they have blocked the prepaid card so certain purchases cannot be made. Check out the
Virgin card if you are under 18.
Who else can’t get prepaid credit cards? Well, ‘dodgy’ people, and by that we mainly mean fraudsters. If you are one of those people who tries to get to money that isn’t yours, then please step away from the website.
